Megachurch televangelist, Jimmy Swaggart, dies at age 90, nearly 2-weeks after suffering cardiac arrest

Rev. Jimmy Swaggart, ounder of Jimmy Swaggart Ministries, has died, his family shared on Tuesday, July 1, 2025.
Swaggart was born on March 15, 1935, in Ferriday, Louisiana. He began full-time ministry in 1955.
The son of a preacher, he grew up poor, but excelled at piano and gospel music.
He served as the pastor of the Family Worship Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
At his peak in the 1980s, Swaggart was the country’s top-rated televangelist, broadcasting to over 2 million households and reportedly generating over $60M in donations.
He was a powerful political force and helped elect presidents Ronald Regan and George Bush.
In 1987, Swaggart was linked to a scandal involving a prostitute. While he never confessed to anything, he tearfully proclaimed in an infamous televised apology, "I have sinned against you."
The following year, Swaggart was photographed at a hotel with Debra Murphree, an admitted prostitute.
Swaggart was defrocked by the Assembly of God church but continued his ministry without a denomination.
On June 15, 2025, Swaggart was rushed to the hospital, suffering from cardiac arrest.
The family announced that he had passed away on July 1, 2025 in a Baton Rouge hospital.
Jimmy Swaggart was 90 years old.
