Maverick City Music & Kirk Franklin/ Tennessee State Marching Band Win BIG at 65th Grammy Awards


The 65th Grammy Awards, representing music's biggest night, took place on Sunday February 5, 2023 in Los Angeles California. A couple of relative newcomers onto the scene had a very good night.


Maverick City Music, which burst onto the scene with hits like "Jireh" and "Man of Your Word" paired this year with gospel superstar Kirk Franklin and swept all four (4) Gospel and Contemporary Christian categories.


They took home the Grammy in the following categories:

  • Best Gospel Performance/ Song for "Kingdom"

  • Best Contemporary Music Performance/Song for "Fear is Not My Future"

  • Best Gospel Album for "Kingdom Book One Deluxe"

  • Best Contemporary Christian Album for "Breathe"

Maverick City Music has won a total of five (5) Grammy Awards, existing only since 2018.


Tennessee State Marching Band also had an exceptional night. They won two (2) Grammys for the following categories:

  • Best Roots Gospel Album for "The Urban Hymanal"

  • Best Spoken Word Poetry Album for "The Poet Who Sat By The Door" by J. Ivy

With their win, Tennessee State University becomes the first HBCU marching band to win a Grammy Award.
