Dorothy Norwood, affectionately known as "The World's Greatest Storyteller," has reached an extraordinary milestone- her 90th birthday!

With a career spanning over seven decades, Norwood's voice, ministry, and message have left an indelible mark on the gospel music industry and the hearts of believers worldwide.

A Life Steeped in Gospel

Born on May 29, 1935, in Atlanta, Georgia, Dorothy Norwood began singing at just eight years old, performing with her family and later touring with gospel quartets. But it was in the 1950s, when she joined the legendary Caravans alongside Albertina Walker, Shirley Caesar, and Inez Andrews- that her name became synonymous with gospel greatness.

As a member of The Caravans, Norwood helped usher in a golden era of gospel music. Their electrifying performances and emotionally charged delivery brought traditional gospel to new audiences, both within and beyond the church. Her storytelling style- equal parts preacher, singer, and spiritual narrator- distinguished her from her peers and made her a fan favorite.

The “Storyteller” of Gospel

Norwood's songs often blend powerful testimony with relatable narratives of struggle, redemption, and hope. From classics like “Somebody Prayed for Me” to the iconic “Oh Jesus" to "Shake The Devil Off," her music paints vivid pictures of life’s trials and triumphs through the lens of faith.

Her 1991 album, “Live with the Northern California GMWA Mass Choir,” topped Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums chart, a testament to her enduring appeal and the spiritual depth of her work.

With over 50 albums to her name, Norwood has continually demonstrated her ability to evolve without compromising the traditional sound and message of gospel music.

A Trailblazer and Teacher

As Dorothy Norwood turns 90, the gospel music community celebrates more than just her longevity; we celebrate a legacy of faith, strength, and service.

Her voice still stirs the soul. Her stories still inspire. Her life still testifies to the power of God.

In an era of evolving gospel styles, Dorothy Norwood remains a vital bridge between the roots of traditional gospel and the future of the genre.

Her contributions continue to inspire both listeners and fellow artists to stay grounded in purpose, truth, and praise.

Happy 90th Birthday to the incomparable Dorothy Norwood—a legend, a pioneer, and a vessel of the Gospel.
