Celebration of Life ceremonies planned for Mama Mosie Burks, legendary singer from the Mississippi Mass Choir, who passed away at 92

Mosie "Mama" Burks, legendary gospel singer from the Mississippi Mass Choir, has passed away.
Born in Forest, Mississippi in 1933, Mama Burks was celebrated for her powerful voice and uplifting performances.
She joined the Mississippi Mass Choir in 1993 and became one of its longest serving members.
She's best known for lead vocalist on such iconic hits as "They Got the Word" and "I'm Not Tired Yet."
In 1997, the Mississippi Mass Choir won the Grammy Award for Best Gospel Album by a Choir or Chorus for their album I'LL SEE YOU IN THE RAPTURE, which featured the song "This Morning When I Rose," where Mama Burks was lead vocalist.
In recent years, Mama Burks had been battling dementia.
Her daughter Barbara announced her passing via Facebook on July 7, 2025.

Public visitation will take place on Tuesday July 15, 2025 at 2pm at Jackson Memorial Funeral Home in Jackson, MS.
There will be a musical celebration that evening at 5pm at Greater Fairview Baptist Church in Jackson, MS.
The official Celebration of Life ceremony will take place on Wednesday July 16, 205 at Greater Bethlehem Temple Apostolic Faith Church in Jackson, MS.

The Celebration of Life cefremon will be live streamed on the Mississippi Mass Choir's Facebook and YouTube page.
Mosie "Mama" Burks was 92 years old.
