Media mogul, Oprah Winfrey, released in a statement today that her father Vernon Winfrey died late Friday after battling cancer.
Oprah revealed that she was able to spend time with her father in Nashville, TN during his final weeks. He was surrounded by friends and loved ones. Oprah's friend and gospel singer Wintley Phipps even sang for him.
Vernon Winfrey was a well known barber and served on the Metro Nashville Council for 16 years.
In past interviews, Oprah credits her father with giving her the home structure and support that she did not receive while staying with her mother and becoming a pregnant teenager.
Vernon Winfrey was 89 years old.
