A Black church has come to the rescue of over 300 families struggling with housing insecurity.

Alfred Street Baptist Church in Virginia recently donated more than $1 million to help pay off the debts of over 300 families in public housing in Alexandria, VA.

The initiative came after Alexandria mayor, Alyia Gaskins, learned that nearly half of public housing residents had overdue rent, with residents owing anywhere from $50 to $30k.

That’s when she reached out to community leaders for help.

Coincidentally, Alfred Street Baptist Church had began its SEEK campaign, its period of fasting and giving, to raise funds and help remedy issues of homelessness and housing.

According to the Washington Post, Alfred Street personally donated $1,049,000 to help 338 families with unpaid rent.

The donation was make via collective contributions of church members over time.

Every resident who received financial relief will need to attend a financial literacy counseling session to help ensure they won’t owe rent in the future- thus, the beginning of a fresh start!

Rev. Howard-John Wesley told his congregation on Easter Sunday, “I just wish somebody [could] give thanks to God for a black Baptist church that gave a million dollars to make certain that people did not lose their homes. To God be the glory; to God be the glory.”
