The African Methodist Episcopal Church held its 52nd Quadrennial Session of the General Conference on Aug. 21-28 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, Ohio.
Over 15,000 people attended the Session over the week.
The organization's Sexual Ethics Discernment Committee put forth a recommendation to repeal the denomination’s ban on same-sex marriage.
However, the recommendation was not accepted by AME bishops who asked the Committee to continue its work and report again at the next General Conference.
In their written address to the General Conference, the bishops questioned whether a committee could settle changes related to LGBTQ matters. This decision calls into question the rationale for having the Committee continue to work on the matter at all for next year's Session.
